All India Radio Launches Balochi Website, Mobile App

  • All India Radio (AIR) has been launched a website and mobile app for its Balochi service to reach people who speak this language across the globe.
  • The move to start an AIR web service comes in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech in which he had brought up the issue of Pakistani atrocities on people of Balochistan and PoK.

India down to 112th spot on World Economic Freedom Index

  • India has slipped by 10 positions to 112th, out of 159 countries and territories, as it “fared badly” across categories including legal system and regulation, according to the Economic Freedom of the World: 2016 Annual Report.

Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma conferred with Arjuna Award

  • Sports Minister Vijay Goel conferred Arjuna Awards on cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane at a function in New Delhi. Sharma was given the award for 2015 and Rahane for 2016.

Govt notifies GST Council

  • The Government has formally notified the GST Council, which will decide on the tax rate, exempted goods and the threshold under the new taxation regime. The council will be chaired by Union Finance Minister and have Minister in charge of Finance or Taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government as its member. Also Minister of State in charge of Revenue or Finance at the Centre would be a member.

Uber partners NSDC, Maruti to skill 1 million by 2018

  • Transportation app Uber has launched a new initiative in partnership with Maruti Suzuki and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for creating livelihood opportunities for one million people by 2018.
  • Uber Technologies Inc. is an American multinational online transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It develops, markets and operates the Uber mobile “app”, which allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request, which the software program then automatically sends to the Uber driver nearest to the consumer, alerting the driver to the location of the customer.

  • BHVS Narayana Murthy, an expert in Avionics has been appointed as Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), Hyderabad.

India and United States start military venture with Exercise YUDH ABHYAS-2016

  • A joint military training exercise of Indian and US Armies, Exercise YUDH ABHYAS 2016, commenced today atChaubattia, Uttarakhand.
  • Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of tactical drills for neutralisation of likely threats that may be encountered in UN peace keeping operations. Experts from both sides will also hold discussions to share each other’s experiences in varied topics for mutual benefit.

Two India-Born MIT Scientists Win Prestigious US Awards

  • Two Indo-American scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been conferred with prestigious awards for their path-breaking inventions.

Reliance Communications-Aircel merger approved

  • Reliance Communications (RCom) board has approved the company’s merger with Aircel, in one of the biggest deals in the telecom space in recent times. It also comes at a time when Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has made an aggressive entry into the telecom industry, sending jitters among incumbents.
  • RCom and Maxis Communications Berhad (MCB) will each hold a 50% stake in the merged entity, with equal representation on the board of directors and all committees. The company will be managed by an independent professional team under the supervision of the Board.
